Declaring Your Major in American Studies Procedures

Please note: Our introductory course, AMST 10, Intro to American Studies, will not be offered in the 2011-12 academic year.

In order to become formally registered for the American Studies major, you will need to do the following:

  • Download and read the American Studies Handbook and print a Major Planning Worksheet. Read both documents carefully in order to make certain that the general goals, requirements, and offerings of the program fit your academic interests.
  • Read with special care the American Studies section of the UCSC General Catalog to make certain you are prepared to complete the major requirements in a timely manner. Note in particular that most courses offered by American Studies require extensive writing.
  • Complete the Planning Worksheet. You can plan specific courses for the current year by checking the American Studies Course Offerings. Pay particular attention to identifying the specific areas of academic interest you'd like to pursue in American Studies.
  • Make an appointment to meet with the American Studies undergraduate adviser. Bring the signed major declaration form AND your completed major planning worksheet to the American studies office.
